GMMB Steals Game with Late-Inning Rally

FH dropped to 1-2 on the season this week due to a late-inning rally and surprising defense from league upstart GMMB.

Fleishman boasted an undefeated record against sister-agency GMMB over the past few years, and entered the game with high hopes to rebound from a three-week rainout layoff. The FH lineup erupted for three runs in the first inning, due to leadoff man Jason Hellmann’s now-routine line drive single, cleanup hitter Jon Berke’s RBI single, an inside-the-park homerun by Dave Whiting, his fourth of the young season.

Both lineups settled down, and the score remained 3-0 FH heading into the bottom of the third inning. However, GMMB was “out for blood,” as quoted by their manager in pre-game conversations, and wouldn’t be held down for long. Their lineup roared back with four consecutive hits in a two-out rally to tie the game at 3-3. Clearly, this was going to be a battle to the end.

FH’s rookies stepped it up in the fourth and fifth innings. New additions Cody Radcliff added another run in the fourth inning with nifty base running with an RBI by Aaron Kaufman, and the team added another run in the fifth inning with a double from Whiting and RBI from phenom Carrie Soforenko. Entering the sixth inning, stakes were high, with FH leading 5-3.

In the bottom half of the frame, GMMB wasted no time closing the gap. A mix of singles and doubles tied the game up, and by the time the dust settled, FH was down 6-5 going into the seventh inning. Three incredible fielding plays by GMMB infielders ended a rally started with singles from Berke and Whiting, and our heroes fell just short. Clearly the multi-week layoff had added on more rust than the team expected.

However, the pleasantly surprising rookie influx has added a dynamic element to FH’s solid core. Many games remain in the season, and FH will look to move to 2-2 when they take on Hill & Knowlton this coming Monday at Meadowbrook Field. Will you be there to cheer them on?

FH Defeats Edelman in Late-Inning Thriller

There is a lot to be said for trash-talk.

With the right delivery, it can strike fear into an opponent’s eye. When substituted for raw talent, it can unveil weakness in an adversary. Name calling, back-handed insults, one-upping, general tomfoolery – there is a certain allure that attracts even the most modest of men to its enchantment like a moth to a flame. No matter how outlandish the banter may become there remains one statistic that trumps any argument – the final score.

In Monday’s much anticipated match-up between Fleishman-Hillard and Edelman, FH had all the right moves to silence the chatter of their bitter rival, in dramatic fashion, with a 13-12 walk-off victory in the bottom of the seventh.

The minute FH took the field the hunger for victory was in their eyes. Consecutive hits came from the first five batters as Jason Hellmann, Carrie Soforenko, Craig Paridy, Jon Berke, and Dave Whiting raised staked FH to a five-run lead in the first inning, culminating in Whiting’s three-run inside-the-park homerun.

Whiting (3-for-4, 2 runs, 4 RBI, 2 HR) was not done there, crushing another bomb as the lead-off hitter in the third, while also turning an unassisted double play. Callie Baum, Jason Werden, and Channing Barringer followed that up with three consecutive singles, and Matt Turnier drove in two RBI on a smash double to right field.

Paridy’s consistent pitching unearthed a new stat in the books this week: strikeouts. Catcher Bonnie Walters must have been giving the right signals behind the place. With three K’s, Paridy threw a perfect game, at least against right-handed female batters wearing black jackets.
Even as FH continued to command the game, with much thanks to Matt Navitsky’s late game heroics at DH, Edelman would not go away without a fight. A late surge in the sixth and seventh innings put Edelman ahead one run going into the bottom of the seventh.

Coming off of a two-run homer in his previous at bat, birthday boy Barringer (3-for-4, 3 runs, 2 RBI, HR) led off the seventh with a single down the third baseline, as Bonnie Walters (2-for-4, 1 run) followed with a double. Turnier (2-for-3, 1 run, 3 RBI) tied the game with a single to right field, and Hellmann completed his perfect game at the plate (5-for-5 ) by outrunning an infield hit juggled by the shortstop.

With no outs and the bases loaded, Carrie Soforenko strode to the plate. Tensions were high - Soforenko had already punished the ball once with a double over the heads of the shallow-playing outfielders in the first inning. The rookie wasn’t done, though. With ice in her blood, she lined a single down the third-base line and Walters scored the winning run. Another chapter in the storied rivalry was written; FH had edged out Edelman 13-12 in what is sure to go down as the best game ever played at any level in the history of America’s pastime.

Coming off of the momentum of such a thrilling victory, FH takes the field again Monday evening to face Burson-Marsteller, in the hopes of moving a game above .500 and up in the East Division standings.

Late Rally Falls Short In Season Opener

On paper, at least, everything looked to be in Fleishman-Hillard’s favor for the season opener versus Ketchum. A deep roster, full of new talent, mixed with a strong set of veterans to lead the charge; a group poised to avenge the team that snatched FH’s chance at a league championship in 2009; even the Bob-Ley-narrated “Outside the Lines” special on the ambitious coach who loved the game so much he sacrificed his body for a chance to play just a few more innings. But, alas, it was not enough to overcome Ketchum’s early onslaught of runs, and FH dropped their opening day game, 15-19.

It took a few innings to knock off the cobwebs, as rusty fielding plagued FH early and often, leading to several unearned runs. Jason Hellmann was kept busy in left field, as a majority of Ketchum’s hits flew in his direction. Offensively, Hellmann (2-for-4) contributed just as much, earning the first run of the 2010 season in the FH stat sheet, and bringing in two runs on a double in the fourth.

Pitcher Craig Paridy went 3-for-3 on two singles, a double, and an RBI, scoring on each at-bat. Third baseman Dave Whiting (2-for-3) racked up two runs, and three RBI off a homerun in the third and a triple in the sixth. David Wickenden, who must have come straight from the batting cages, brought in three runs on two – count ‘em, two! – inside the park homeruns. Take that, Father Time! Heralded rookie Abby Parr made her FH debut by fooling the defense with her speed to run out shallow hits, going 2-for-3.

Our colleagues at VOX made notable contributions of their own, as Channing Barringer (2-for-3), husband of FH’er Ariel Barringer, earned his spot on the roster unanimously. Though new to our squad, Barringer proved he was no stranger to the game with spectacular fielding in left center field matched with two doubles at the plate, resulting in two runs and an RBI. One Ketchum hitter, foolish enough to jog to first on a bloop hit to center, was surprised to see Barringer unleash a perfect throw that beat him to first base by half a step. Meanwhile, Callie Baum and Jen Anderson were their typical defensive rocks at first and second base, respectively.

Even though we were losing, FH showed great endurance late in the game. A late flurry of hits at the plate brought FH back within a few runs of victory. Paridy led off with a double, followed by a triple by Whiting, and then a homerun by Wickenden, and all of the sudden FH was back in the game. Doubles by Jason Werden (1-for-3, RBI) and Barringer kept the groove going, while Matt Navitsky (2 RBI) crushed a deep fly ball to left field that brought in two more runs.

Intern season always brings a great infusion of talent, and Bonnie Walters, Matt Turnier, and Carrie Soforenko create high hopes for 2010. Soforenko sat out on with a bum ankle, but that did not keep her from cheering on her teammates. Walters (2-for-3) scored early and added a key hit and run in the sixth-inning comeback attempt. Turnier (2-for-4) brought in the seventh run of the inning, and FH was just four runs away from a tied score. Just as things started to go in FH’s favor, the game was called by darkness, final score 15-19.

However, the season has only just begun and a good team has a short memory. Come out for the “Fight For .500” as FH faces Hill & Knowlton this Monday evening.

It’s the time of the seeeeeeeeaaason

The time has come yet again for another year of PR League Softball. The chalk has been laid, the grass freshly cut, the bats whittled down from fallen trees (thanks again, Snowpocalypse 2010). The poignant aroma of competition fills the air as Fleishman-Hillard looks to take back their rightful place as champions, the sting of last season’s Championship Game loss versus Ketchum having subsided.

Skipper Silvio Marcacci has assembled a deep roster comprised of a number of veterans as well as wide-eyed fresh faces eager to take the diamond. The FH faithful gathered in Rock Creek Park this past Monday for a friendly scrimmage, meshing teams from across the league (though not every team had the courtesy to attend).

Early-season Gold Glove chatter is already surfacing in Jason “The Flyin’ L’Chaim” Hellmann’s corner, as Hellmann stole a homerun at the warning track from going over the fence in left field. Meanwhile at third base, nothing got past Coleman Hutchins’ glove.

Even with a broken finger – suffered during her tireless practice regimen, mind you – Callie Baum was flawless at first base. Following Monday’s scrimmage Baum was reported to have said, “Ouch” upon removing her glove, sources say; however, Buster Olney reported Tuesday that Baum will start the season on the active roster, refusing to be sidelined by the injury.

Newcomer Bonnie Walters put together her very own highlight reel at the plate, while Carrie Soforenko would have pitched a perfect game, had we played a full seven innings and, you know, kept score. But those stats are inconsequential. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the fact that Jason Werden wore cleats, which is a win in its own right.

Next Monday’s season opener will be against the very team that handed FH their last loss at the most inopportune time – Ketchum. Whether you’ve never experienced an afternoon in Rock Creek enjoying grown men and women taking softball too seriously, or you are a seasoned patron of the game, come support your colleagues Monday evening, April 19. Expect a rematch of Biblical proportions, for Hell hath no fury like FH scorned.

FH Surges Into The Championship Game

Softball is meant to be a game of sportsman–(and woman) ship. However, after weeks of smack talk, hype, anticipation, and tiresome excuses, Fleishman-Hillard was ready to slaughter Edelman in last week’s semifinal matchup. “Slaughter” may seem a bit strong of a description, but slaughter is nothing without laughter, the last of which went to FH in their 10-8 victory over Edelman last Thursday.

Coach Silvio Marcacci had a score to settle with the Edelman faithful, who engaged he and a number of his FH colleagues in a battle of verbal abuse across multiple social mediums in the days leading up to the game. He put all of their childish banter to rest though, when he hit his first out-of-the-park homerun ever during his first at-bat of the game. Starting the game in leftfield and closing out the final inning on the mound, Marcacci’s performance was flawless, going 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBIs, and two doubles on top of the homerun in the first.

Not to be outdone, Dave Whiting (1-for-3, one run, two RBIs) ripped a shot into centerfield, utilizing his speed to earn a two-run, inside-the-park homerun. If Marcacci’s homer was what set the tone for FH, and Whiting’s was the steady recital of things to come, then Jon Berke’s (3-for-3, two runs, five RBIs) demolition of the ball in the fourth was the salt in the wound. Fleishman was hoping to provide the distance of the three-run homerun for the record books, but unfortunately the ball has yet to land. On the bright side, some lucky astronaut will be receiving quite the souvenir.

For those looking to trade up in their fantasy league, don’t “pass over” Jason “The Flyin’-L’chaim” Hellmann (1-for-2, one run), whose stock continues to rise on the stat sheet and in the depth chart. Mahesh Subramanian turned in another solid game, going 1-for-2 and contributing solid outfield play, and Dave Forman chipped in his standard two-hit, airtight middle-infield defense effort.

Jason Werden and Laura DeSantis accounted for three runs between them, and Callie Baum, Lowen Baumgarten, Matt Navitsky, Andy Logan, and Rachelle Lacroix were all essential assets to Fleishman’s defensive stand. Realizing the importance of the game at hand, legendary FH Softball alumni Bill Garber prowled the sidelines, dispensing sagely advice and pep talks to his FH progeny. The FH fan club was well-represented by Cheryl Haas and Juliet Johnson, who tweeted the night away.

Edelman’s frustration was transparent. They chose the road less traveled in a league meant for clean play and camaraderie, as an Edelman player leveled Craig Paridy (P, six innings, 1-for-2) while he attempted to tag the runner out on a play at home plate. As both benches watched on, the runner lowered his shoulder and speared out his elbow, catching Paridy off guard right in the jaw. Fleishman was up in arms over the collision, but cooler heads prevailed, and FH let the scoreboard speak for itself.

With three outs to go in the top of the seventh and the bottom of their order due up, Edelman stepped up to the plate for one last-ditch effort to salvage their season. Two pop flies to centerfield and a bunt single brought up Edelman’s powerful leadoff hitter. Swinging on the second pitch, a screaming liner was hit into shallow left field, but lucky for FH, none other than David Wickenden was patrolling the gap. The Wizard lived up to his name by stabbing the liner and flipping the ball to DeSantis for the game-winning force out at second base. Marcacci exploded with excitement, and hoisted DeSantis in the air, as the Edelman batter fell to his knees en route to first base, and the FH squad charged into the infield to celebrate.

For one FHer, Thursday’s game was her last, as Ellen Black completed her internship. Black, best known for her incredible speed and tenacious spunk, returns to Vanderbilt University this week to begin training for the upcoming cross country season. FH bids her adieu and wishes her the best of luck.

Next up, we’re going to the ‘Ship; it is what we have played for all season long. The Championship Game is this Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Meadowbrook Park in Rock Creek. Our opponent: an undefeated Ketchum squad looking to complete their perfect season, but FH is out to make certain this does not happen. Through a three-year championship drought, through two tough losses early in the season, through Mother Nature’s infinite rainouts, up to the six-game winning streak that has brought us to this point - we have not come this far to leave empty handed now.

It does not matter if you are an avid fan or a first time follower, now is the time to come see FH Softball in action. So turn back to the clock to silver spandex, gratuitous amounts of hairspray, and your favorite pair of zubaz pants, because it’s THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!

Now It Matters

Following two consecutive seasons of tough playoff losses, Fleishman-Hillard started their trek toward a league championship with a first-round win over an animated and energetic GMMB squad in a 17-7 victory on Thursday. The win propelled FH to the semi-finals of the playoffs where they will face sworn enemy, Edelman.

Lead-off hitter Jason “The Flyin’-L’chaim” Hellmann saved his best offensive game of the season for the playoffs with a 4-for-5 effort that included two doubles, two runs and an RBI single in the sixth. For his effort, Hellmann received the coveted award for Offensive Player of the Game. Needless to say, he was ecstatic.

Mahesh Subramanian played multiple positions in Thursday’s game – or at least it seemed so – as the right-centerfielder/leftfielder/shortstop/second baseman racked up a number of web gems that put Sportscenter’s Top Ten Plays to shame. Subramanian (3-for-4, 3 runs, 2 triples, 1 RBI) was named the Defensive Player of the Game, and it was all the commentators could talk about Thursday evening.

Jon Berke (3-for-5), Dave Forman (2-for-4), and Silvio Marcacci (3-for-5) continued to pad their stats, between them with seven extra base hits, eight runs, and nine RBIs. Amanda Schildt and Callie Baum both had great field presence with solid defense that anchored the right side of the diamond throughout the game. Jason Werden (4-for-5) scored a run and added two RBIs to his season total of 14, still three behind Marcacci’s team-leading total of 17.

Matt Navitsky and Lowen Baumgarten split time at DH, producing two runs and two RBIs, while Ellen Black and Laura DeSantis shared the vacancy behind home plate. DeSantis may have found her true calling not with a bat in-hand, but a BlackBerry, sending an astonishing 37 tweets to keep FH’s anxious fans in the know with an aggressive play-by-play.

The game’s MVP was not any FH player, however; it was the entire GMMB team. Not only did they display excellent defense throughout the game, swing the bats well all day, and enjoy the camaraderie of the atmosphere, but they joined their company kin out afterward for a drink (or twelve) and a few laughs. Cheers to GMMB, for being an absolute class act.

But now things get serious again. The second round of the playoffs hold a game some think is sheer destiny in the making, as FH will face arch-rivals Edelman, yet again. The saga that is FH v. Edelman is one as old as time, as bitter as unsweetened lemonade, and as tense as a blind date. The 5-and-4 firm defeated Porter Novelli in the quarterfinals to make it to this semifinal matchup versus the red hot Fleishman squad. This should be the fifth meeting of the year for these bitter rivals. I wonder why that is not so…

What you need to know to survive: The game is this Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Rock Creek Park. Here’s a map. Now even those who claim they are not familiar with D.C. are out of excuses. Come support your colleagues for what proves to be an epic battle. Winner goes to the league championship; loser takes the long, bumpy road home. Winnin' in The Rain

As the old adage says, “If you mess with fire, you’re going to get burned.” Thursday afternoon, FH found that the same goes for water.

Following an afternoon of tweeting the weather and hashtagging “reverse psychology” to psych out Mother Nature, the temptress of the temperature made us gargle our words. To say it rained would be an understatement; however, FH and their opponent GMMB remained steadfast (or is that stubborn?) to play through the monsoon. When the skies cleared, what lay over the rainbow was FH’s fourth consecutive win, 12-5 over GMMB – closing out the regular season with a 5-2 record, good enough to clinch first place in the West Division heading into the playoffs.

Summer intern Andy Logan made his softball debut as designated hitter, sharing the responsibility with Matt Navitsky, grabbing a RBI followed by a run in his first at-bat. In standard fashion, Jon Berke, Jason Hellmann, and Dave Whiting each contributed several RBIs themselves, and tacked on a couple of runs to the lead.

The conditions proved to have no affect on Silvio Marcacci, who had a triple in the first inning and home run in the fourth. In contrast, Jason Werden convincingly proved that he was no Mark Buehrle, pitching three innings before being sent the showers. Reliever Craig Paridy took over the pitcher’s mound in the fourth inning to complete the game, and helped his own cause with four hits, two runs, and two RBIs.

Mahesh Subramanian and Dave Forman split time in right field, and each contributed a hit and scored a run. Lowen Baumgarten, Ellen Black, and Amanda Schildt all made great defensive plays and contributed clutch hits. Callie Baum yet again demonstrated her ability to be a utility player with slick defense in right-center field and at first base, where she teamed up with second basewoman Jen Anderson for the ultimate one-two punch against GMMB.

So, FH finishes the regular season with yet another victory, peace of mind that no one was struck by lightning, and satisfaction that we finally triumphed over Mother Nature. Playoffs begin this week, when FH faces GMMB in an inter-Omnicom battle royal on Thursday, July 30. Nothing compares to playoff suspense, so if you’ve wanted to make a game all season, this week is your perfect chance to cheer on our loveable band of intramural athletes.

A Rivalry Renewed

May 7, May 28, July 2, and July 16.

What do these four dates have in common? Fleishman-Hillard’s bitter rival, Edelman. Following two rainouts and a scheduling conflict that led to cancelling a makeup game in early July, FH was out for blood. Both squads knew the result of the game would lead to major bragging rights in the District, as FHDC’s own Mary Lojacono, Bill Black, and Juliet Johnson stood in the gallery alongside Edelman’s Frank Kauffman.

However, there was nothing that Edelman could magically hide up their sleeves – not even arguments involving the league rulebook, which was broken out on more than one occasion – to avoid defeat as FH emerged victorious, 15-9.

FH established our defensive presence immediately, opening the game with three quick outs. Throughout the game play after play resulted in holding the Edelman bats at bay. At times, it didn’t even seem close, especially when FH lead 15-3 going into the seventh inning before Edelman staged a 6-run final rally before FH sealed their fourth win to jump into first place in the division.

FH’s defense proved airtight. Craig Paridy even played through injury after wounding his left hand during a play at first. The Award for Defensive Player of the Game, however, went to Callie Baum, who “refused to be pigeon-holed as an outfielder.” Baum certainly backed up the bold claim when she moved to first base for three innings, providing the game-ending play snagging a one-hopper for the third out in top of the seventh.

For as well as the defense played, the offense produced some of the best statistics of the season. Jason Werden (2-for-3) was possessed at the plate Thursday evening, patiently waiting for two pitches that resulted in a three-run triple and an inside-the-park grand slam. The first would have been a grand slam as well, but apparently you have to touch all the bases to score a run. Thankfully, Edelman had the rulebook in hand to make the controversial, yet correct call.

Dave Whiting provided the infield play of the night, lunging for line drive at short to get a critical out, and continued to produce offensively by going 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI, and a triple. Jason Hellmann made a number of key plays in left field while also going 2-for-4 and scoring a run.

Rachelle Lacroix (2-for-2), Silvio Marcacci (3-for-3), Jon Berke (3-for-3), and Mahesh Subramanian (3-for-3) were all flawless at the plate, racking up seven of FH’s 15 runs. Lacroix was especially crafty with her ball-placement, allowing her to reach base in all three attempts. Berke smashed the ball for consecutive doubles and a single that could have easily been home runs if it were not for great fielding by Edelman. Stephanie Slobodian, Ellen Black, Stefanie Litman, Jen Anderson, and Laura DeSantis each had great defensive games and contributed clutch hits to contribute to the big win.

We know you must be thinking: “Man, I missed the last regular season game! How will I ever live with myself?” But, not to worry! The season has been extended by one week to make up for one this year’s six rainout games. And following this week’s game, playoffs are right around the corner.

Whiting for MVP?

It is a difficult task for any team to start a winning streak, let alone one with such little depth, a shortened season, playing a game on one day’s notice, and a missing mascot. But, our motley crew never took into account the factors stacked against them, and Fleishman-Hillard convincingly brought home their second win in a row, defeating Ogilvy on Monday night, 22-13, a particularly sweet victory for Jon Berke who was facing his former firm.

Co-Coach Dave Whiting was the star of the afternoon, going 5-for-5, scoring in all five at-bats, with three home runs. Even with the eight RBIs he brought home for FH in his MVP-caliber performance, the always-competitive Whiting still yearned for one more at-bat to grab a single and thus complete the cycle for the evening.

He certainly was the only player who noticed this “lack of achievement” as both squads sang his praises. Ogilvy did so in a less sincere manner, as the sore-losing opponent attempted to sour the cheerful atmosphere with their negative remarks toward the FH players. Nothing would bring down the FHers spirits, however, as each of Fleishman’s 22 hits later became a run. As co-coaches Whiting and Craig Paridy discussed following the game, “The best part about a win like that is that everyone contributed. You have to be happy with a game like that, it is so much more fun to win that way.”

Berke (4-for-5), Dave Forman (3-for-4), and Jason Werden (3-4) accounted for three runs apiece (for those who are counting, Whiting, Berke, Forman, and Werden collectively scored more than the entire Ogilvy team, and we’re not done yet!).

Paridy began the game on the mound, but strategically moved to first base after the first inning. Mattitude Navitsky got the call from the bullpen in the second inning, throwing a slew of “aggressive” yet effective pitches that the Ogilvy players could not wait to complain about. Along with a number of gold-glove caliber catches at first, Paridy went 4-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs. Navitsky went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI, a respectable outing for any pitcher.

Two outfield performances stood out late in the game, holding the Ogilvy hitters at bay. Mahesh Subramanian and VOX’s Callie Baum made it look all too easy as they efficiently covered leftfield and right-centerfield, respectively. Even though both went 1-for-4, their sole hits each accounted for a run.

Stephanie Slobodian and Ellen Black held down the fort behind home plate while simultaneously padding their stats, as Slobodian earned an RBI and Black scored a run in the sixth. Amanda Schildt scored two runs off of two hits and an RBI.

Fleishman-Hillard’s next game is slotted for Thursday, July 2 versus Edelman as we head into the July 4 holiday. Come support your fellow FHers before heading out for your weekend plans as they go for their third consecutive win. The office is closed Friday – what better way to spend a summer afternoon? Who & Knowlton?

April showers usually bring May flowers, but unfortunately those showers extended to plague June with miserable waterlogged weather and three consecutive rainouts. The sun gods finally shone down brightly on Fleishman-Hillard yesterday, however, and FH trounced H&K in a 16-3 romp that featured a number of fresh faces. The freshest face of all was the new team mascot, Mr. and Mrs. Coach’s most recent addition to the family, Frank the pug.

Summer interns Dave Forman, Ellen Black, Stefanie Litman, and Laura DeSantis provided spirit, tenacity and heavy bats all throughout the game. Black and Litman talked a big game all week leading up to Thursday’s game, while Forman and DeSantis took the more humble approach; all four proved to be true diamonds in the rough.

Forman kept his eyes open in left field for the first half of the game and was the ideal designated hitter in the final innings, going two for three at bat with three RBIs, two runs, and an inside the park homerun that sent the place into a frenzy. Black scored a run during her only at bat, splitting the catching duties with Amanda Schildt, while Litman and DeSantis dominated second base during their respective shifts. DeSantis also earned a run and brought one home between her two times at the plate.

FH also had two guest appearances from our extended family and friends. Callie Baum and Jen Anderson of VOX fame were great additions to the squad, between Baum’s 3-for-4 performance and Anderson’s RBI single in the fifth inning. Former intern Amanda Schildt was her usual rock-solid self, chipping in with two hits, sterling defense at catcher, and rides to the field.

Silvio Marcacci (2-for-4, 1 run, 2 RBIs) and Craig Paridy (4-for-4, 2 runs, 1 RBI) both produced big offensive numbers while also splitting time pitching a gem on the mound. Will Sullivan’s glove was a magnet for the ball at third base, as he made two acrobatic diving catches in a row in the third inning.

Jason Werden had a banner day, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs and one standout defensive tag-team play from right field with David Wickenden to throw out an advancing runner at second base in the fourth inning. Jon Berke, Mahesh Subramanian, Lowen Baumgarten, and Matt Navitsky (who kept up the newly formed tweeting tradition) had six hits and four runs between them.

After Thursday’s 32-hit showing, FH has adrenaline pumping and ice water flowing through their veins. The good weather and good fortune are here to stay, so come enjoy a night out with your fellow FHers as they take on arch-rival Edelman next Thursday, July 2.

Mother Nature to FH: Bring Galoshes

FH Softball was once again denied the opportunity to face off against arch-rival Edelman last night, as Mother Nature rained our team out for the third time this season. The disappointing and last-second turn of events came at of day that saw co-coach Craig Paridy accosted on the street by Edelman thuggery and a once-quiet inter agency rivalry spill into the Twittersphere.

Pre-game action was fast and furious, as our heroes valiantly made the trek up to Rock Creek Park, dodging raindrops, lightening, and park rangers all the way. Jason Hellmann pledged to play in the mud, if necessary. Coach Marcacci and Craig even engaged in a game of brinksmanship with the devious Edelman coaching staff, threatening a forfeit when their team balked at the prospect of playing in the rain. Alas, the titanic matchup was not to be, and threats of fines and league sanctions by the park rangers shut down the evening’s showdown.

While FH retired to the relative sanctity of a local restaurant/watering hole to talk strategy (aka drink cold beverages and enjoy the finest culinary offerings), reports floated in that Edelman stared danger in the face and didn’t blink once when they refused to leave the fields to continue batting practice. Clearly they take the FH rivalry very seriously.

So the showdown remains on the horizon for our squad, forced to remain unresolved until the July 16 game. Who know what hijinks will unfold before that day of destiny?

One thing is certain, however, FH will once again attempt to take the field this coming Thursday, June 4 against cross-town rivals Ketchum. Plan on more exciting action, adventures, and excitement from your beloved team, as always dutifully reported right here.

Burson hands FH a tough loss

After two weeks of being rained out, Fleishman-Hillard finally stepped back on the diamond last Thursday to face a very competitive Burson team. With a squandered squad, a pair of helpful hands arrived in clutch fashion to make sure FH had enough players to field a team. Kathryn DeVito was also on hand to keep the fans updated, tweeting from the bench with an in-depth play-by-play.

Rachel Lacroix exchanged the Mac for the mitt for the evening, talking a good game behind the plate at catcher, making sure each Burson player knew just who they were dealing with. Julie Marcacci turned out to be quite the addition, with three hits in four at-bats, earning a run in the second inning.

Mrs. Coach’s counterpart, Silvio Marcacci, accounted for a triple and an RBI during his first at-bat, bringing Jason Hellman home for the first run of the game. Marcacci then scored following a sacrifice-fly RBI by Molly Williams. FH took the lead early, as Dave Whiting scored the third of three runs to close out the first inning.

The next two innings were evenly matched with two runs apiece scored by FH and Burson in the second and a scoreless third. The top of the fourth caught FH by surprise, when a moon shot to left field got over the head of Jason Hellman and resulted in a grand slam for Burson, much to the dismay of the FH hopeful. The inning ended with five Burson runs, but Jason made it close when he earned one back for FH in the bottom of the inning with a single and some nifty base running.

The remainder of the game was made up of great defensive plays, as Jon Berke, Dave, and David Wickenden all kept their heads on a swivel, fielding superbly to hold Burson at bay. The defensive player of the game was Dan Horowitz, who took a line drive on the mound straight to the stomach. Though the wind was knocked out of him, the reeling Horowitz still managed to make the play at first to Silvio to earn the out. Horowitz was placed on injured reserve for all of an inning, as he nursed his injury with a cold beer, and nursed his pride with another.

After such an impressive defensive stand, it came down to the bottom of the seventh for FH to make a statement and dig themselves out of a 6-7 deficit. A quiet “FH” huddled cheer preceded the final at bat. Team spirits were just as high as the tension in the air when Burson fans began to heckle the FH batters.

With the game on the line, Jason Werden stood at the plate, waiting patiently for the pitch that never came. With a runner on base and two outs, Jason smacked a line drive that up the middle and seemed destined to bridge the open gap in shallow center and tie the game. But, the screamer was acrobatically snagged mid-air by Burson’s player second baseman, and ended the game in a close, but losing effort.

Though defeated, Fleishman-Hillard held their heads high, engaging in festivities where everyone wins as they shared the remnants of the FH kegger with the opposing victors.

Pray that any inclement weather holds off and come watch FH take on bitter rival Edelman in a makeup game from early May. An upset is on the horizon as FH takes on the (2-1) West Division leader this Thursday, May 28.

FH Starts the 2009 Season Off Right

Fleishman-Hillard began the 2009 softball season in nail-biter fashion yesterday with an 11-10 win over league newcomer Hill & Knowlton. In a technological twist, the game was live-Tweeted for all the FH’ers still at the office diligently working on pressing client deadlines.

Our heroes took the field to an overcast and threatening sky, and immediately showed H&K they were ready to play with two runs in the first inning on a double by Silvio Marcacci and two runs in the second courtesy of triples by Craig Paridy and Mahesh Subramanian. Tensions ran high when the H&K bench erupted with a stream of trash talk directed at the FH fielders after two quick outs in the bottom of the second inning, and H&K’s batters responded to the inspiration with a four-run rally to tie the score at four runs apiece.

The Fleishman squad remained undaunted, however. At times appearing to hit and score at will, FH tacked on six total runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings with an onslaught of timely hits capped off by Coach Marcacci’s triple, a moon-shot off the left field fence by Jon Berke, and RBI hits by Molly Williams, Dave Whiting, Craig Paridy, and Luke Merkel.

Riding high on their offensive output, Fleishman quieted the H&K bats through the fifth inning. A mixture of quality pitching by Coach Marcacci and incredible fielding plays in the infield by Dave Whiting, Jon Berke, and Craig Paridy combined with the seemingly everywhere-at-once outfield coverage of Mahesh Subramanian and Jason Hellman to limit H&K down to only run scored. Smelling blood in the water, Stephanie Slobodian got into the action with merciless taunting of H&K batters from behind the plate. With daylight dimming, it appeared FH was guaranteed their first victory of the young season.

But H&K had something left in the tank, and FH soon learned they had definitely come out to play. The opposition bats erupted for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, capped off by a three-run blast to deep right field. In mere minutes, H&K had tied the game up, a fact their bench made sure the FH fielders were aware of. Dave Whiting mercifully ended the inning with a running catch in short left field, and FH left the field tied, with only one inning left in the game.

The drama could not have been higher as the FH hitters grabbed their bats in the top of the seventh inning. Score a run, and they had a shot to win. Fail to score a run, and the best they could hope for would be a tie in the record books. With the hitting prowess that H&K had displayed minutes before, an opening day loss loomed menacingly.

Dave Whiting started things off with a ringing single, but an impressive fielding play on Jon Berke’s line drive to third base forced Dave out at second base. Molly Williams wasted no time with a line drive to right field, and Jon raced to third base. Victory was now only 60 feet away. Craig Paridy stepped up to bat and promptly knocked Jon in with the go-ahead run, showing the clutch hitting skills that allowed him to drive in the second-most runs for FH in 2008.

After H&K’s defense clamped down, FH took the field, determined to snatch a win from under their opposition’s noses. Even though their best hitters were up, FH set them down 1-2-3 with shutdown defense and just like that, the game was over. FH was 1-0, euphoric with their win, and ready to face whatever the league threw at them.

But, perennial arch-rivals Edelman loom menacingly on the schedule in week two action. Will FH prevail again? Stay tuned to find out.

FH Softball 2008, Improbable Underdog, Passes Away at 7-6.

The 2008 Fleishman-Hillard softball season, a wide-ranging and epic 13 games that ushered in the post-Tara Walker era, passed into that silent and cold dark night on Monday August 4th at 8:37 p.m. with a 10-8 semi-final defeat at the hands of its merciless opponent Porter-Novelli.

FH softball 2008 lived a life of ups and downs. The season started out with promise in those first few formative weeks, as upset victories over defending champion Porter-Novelli and powerhouse Burson-Marsteller vaulted FH atop the league with a 2-0 record. But the good times did not last forever. After such a heralded start, many considered the possibility that FH wasted its formative weeks during a 2-4 mid-season slump.

Some — most notably the other corporate PR softball teams — thought FH softball was washed up, having squandered the legacy of excellence that its forbearers had scratched out through their blood, sweat, and tears.

But FH Softball wasn’t ready to give up just yet. “Two factors turned FH Softball’s season around: the influx of interns who played with passion and tenacity,” said Coach Silvio Marcacci, “and the veteran leadership of PJ and The Wizard.”

FH Softball proved more resilient than anyone could have imagined. Undaunted by its early season struggles, FH softball dusted itself off, snubbed its nose at every detractor, and won three of its last four games through a mix of timely hitting, gritty pitching, and tough defense.

“We all loved FH Softball, and that month gave us renewed hope it would live on,” commented team fan club President Juliet Johnson. “It broke my heart to hear the news that FH Softball’s brief existence had ended so suddenly.”

Many had hoped that a first-round playoff win over Ketchum would spark a renewed vitality. But ultimately, Porter proved too much for the team to overcome. In spite of valiant efforts by hitters and fielders alike to keep the season alive, Porter inflicted too much damage in the first four innings for a full recovery to occur.

FH Softball enjoyed many of life’s other pleasures, including launching model rockets in the outfield during games, playing with herds of dogs and their recalcitrant owners, getting rained out and flooded more than anyone could have ever imagined, and relaxing after games at Cleveland Park Bar and Grill.

Will Sullivan was named FH Softball 2008’s MVP in a quiet ceremony. Dave Whiting was named runner-up.

Playoffs: the second season

Maybe it was the intrepid cheering section. Perhaps it was Rheinlander’s flair or Coach’s playoff beard. Some thought it was the last-second arrival of two seasoned veterans. At times, it seemed to be all due to “the Natural.”

Whatever it was, it worked. Fleishman-Hillard softball started the 2008 playoffs off the right way with a statement game against Ketchum. Our bats came alive early with seven runs in the first inning, and when the dust had settled, FH won 20-7. Our incredible offensive performance saw the team bat .625 and pound out 32 hits, including 17 doubles.

Superstar performances abounded at the plate, leading our opponents to audibly wonder if we had “hired” some ringers. Dave Whiting made it look easy, going 5 for 5 with two massive home runs, four runs, and five rbis. Will Sullivan served notice he was still the front runner for team MVP with his 5 for 5 performance, three doubles, and five rbis.

But they weren’t alone. Every player contributed offensively, especially Silvio Marcacci with four hits and three runs, Molly Williams and Dan Horowitz with three doubles apiece, and Matt Kretman with three rbis.

But offense barely tells the story. FH played defense like a team possessed. Angela Schonberg made the catch of the game — an incredible over-the-shoulder catch in right field, while Jason Werden and Coleman Hutchins showed off with several diving and running catches in left and center fields. Dan pitched shut-down softball and effortlessly fielded his position.

Jessica Rheinlander and “Bulldog” Baumgarten combined at catcher to throw out several attempted bunts, including a rally-killing throw by Lowen in the fifth inning. Matt Kretman made an incredible diving play to rob a Ketchum batter in the third, and Will, Dave, and Silvio combined on a nifty inning-ending double play in the fourth.

Through it all, FH’s cheering section was led by our unofficial fan club president, Juliet Johnson. Amanda Schildt went from the cheering section to the field, contributing a pinch-hit single run scored to keep a big fifth inning rally alive. Eliza Kanovsky and Emily Canis showed off their custom-made jerseys and team banners, and out cheered all past fan outings — even the LoJacono’s team’s legendary week five performance.

So now we march into the semi-finals. Edelman awaits our inspired team in next Monday’s showdown, fresh off their defeat of Omnicom sister company GMMB. Victory is not guaranteed, and the stakes are high, but FH has momentum and won’t go down without a seven-inning fight. After Monday’s game, the championship game is within reach, and next week’s semifinal will be a fight for the ages.

PJ-powered softball

FH softball got a surprise boost last week when Paul Johnson showed up unannounced for our game against Omnicom rivals GMMB.

Leaders lead, and PJ led FH with a masterful performance from the pitching mound and the batters box. In addition to tossing a gem, PJ lit up the opposing pitching staff with two doubles and a triple.

But PJ was in great company with big games at the dish by Will “Guinness” Sullivan (three doubles), Dave Whiting (two doubles and a triple), Silvio Marcacci (double and two rbis), Coleman “Nederlander” Hutchins (three hits and a double), and Molly Williams (two rbis) to lead FH to an 11-7 victory in last week’s corporate league softball action.

FH’s bats came alive early and often, posting runs to the board in four straight innings. Craig Paridy started a three-run rally in the fifth inning with an rbi double to cap FH’s scoring, and lock-down defense in the field held GMMB to only six runs through the first six innings. Lowen “Bulldog” Baumgarten entered as a defensive replacement and his quick reflexes saved an important run.

While PJ tossed the pearl for 5 solid innings, Dan “Nail in the Coffin” Horowitz was given the nod to close out the final two innings and did just that to even FH’s season record at 3-3.

But those are not the only stories to tell from week six. Our summer interns all brought their game faces, and made huge plays at different points in the game. Jessica Rheinlander showed everyone how VMI plays softball with a sick catch at second and a line drive to maintain the fifth inning rally. Not to be outdone, Angela Schonberg was a menace behind the plate at catcher and chipped in with a much needed rbi. Matt Kretman, Jason “I brought my spikes” Werden, and Amanda Schildt appeared to be everywhere on the field at once, alternating between slick defensive plays and deft base-running.

With the season half in the books, FH is heating up at just the right time. Four straight Monday night games await us in the next month, starting with a rematch against bitter rival Burson-Marsteller tonight at 6:30 p.m. After our late-inning rally sunk Burson in week two action, they will surely be looking for some payback. But, rumors abound about the 2008 debut of heralded FH’er David Wickenden — and we are ready for whatever BM can throw at us.

The Best (and Worst) of Times

Ah, FH softball weeks three and four – it was the best of times; it was the worst of times.

In week three action, FH came from behind an early deficit with a clutch rally to defeat our arch-nemesis Burson 16-13. However, in week four, FH suffered from an onslaught of monster home runs and lost to 2007 league champion Porter 15-2.

Week three saw contributions from up and down the lineup, and sharp fielding across the field. Staff ace Dan Horowitz took the mound and baffled Burson’s hitters all game with a mix of pitches. Craig Paridy and Will Sullivan continued their early season jostling for the team MVP award, as Craig went 5-5 with an impressive bases-loaded double and six RBIs while Will answered with a 5-5 performance of his own highlighted by four runs and a late triple to slam the door shut on our opposition.

Impressive hitting displays were also put on by several other FHers. Silvio Marcacci had three hits and a leadoff triple to start a six-run sixth inning, while Luke Merkel and his throwback jersey had three hits. Meanwhile, the FH Mollys showed Burson they came to play. Molly Gherty showed cool discipline in her first game of the year with two hits and two runs, while Molly Williams continued her torrid start with three hits and two RBIs.

The rest of the team put on a fielding clinic, lead by Andrew McClellan who bravely played through an early injury to make a clutch catch late in the game. The catching platoon of Kelly Moran and Brianne Hoppe switched between tormenting opposing hitters and diving for foul balls, and Lowen Baumgarten showed good instincts and heart in his first ever softball start. Last, but certainly not least, FH fans turned out in droves to help cheer the team on, including almost the entire LoJacono team, Juliet Johnson, and Jen Haslip.

FH left nothing on the field in a gritty win, which may explain the tough night we had on a quick turnaround in Monday’s loss to Porter.

Last year’s league champions evened our season series at one win apiece with a power display not seen since the 1998 artificially-enhanced home run chase between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa.

Porter batters hit three prodigious blasts and just missed a fourth while their fielders seemed to catch every ball FH hit to jump out to an imposing 13-0 lead by the fourth inning. Un-intimidated, FH clamped down with tight defense and a brave seventh inning rally, but fell short.

As is usually the case in tough losses, the final score didn’t reflect the grit our team showed. Andrew McClellan made a spot start and several slick plays at pitcher before being relieved by closer Jeff Weintraub, who showed off his Soul Train dance moves in between innings.

FH kept our heads in the game till the bitter end, and our seventh inning rally was keyed by clutch hitting by Silvio Marcacci, Will Sullivan, Craig Paridy, Molly Williams, and Andrew McClellan.

Notable performances at the plate and in the field were also turned in by Ben Clark, Molly Gherty, Brianne Hoppe, Dave Whiting, Jenny Alonso, and Lowen Baumgarten.

Next week is a bye week because of the Memorial Day holiday, but we’ll take the field again on Thursday, June 5th against Ogilvy, and look to improve our record to 3-1.

Our opponent was the 2007 PR softball league champions. Beset by injuries and last-minute client deadlines, only nine members of the FH softball team could take the field. Week one had been rained out by Mother Nature, and some would say we were rusty. League rules prevented Tara Walker from playing with us this year. A low murmur of doubt could be heard during warm-up exercises.

But it didn’t matter.

FH began the 2008 season with a resounding 22-8 victory over defending champions Porter-Novelli behind deft pitching, incredible defense, and an offensive explosion seven months in the making. FH’s victory wasn’t even as close as the score indicates, as Porter could only manage one run until darkness fell on the field in the top of the seventh, obscuring fly balls and making even routine plays dangerous.

Coleman Hutchins, making a last-minute spot pitching start for injured ace Dan Horowitz, completely shut down the opposition’s offense with his nasty left-handed delivery. Buoyed by the power of his vast digital knowledge, he mopped up at the plate, with three runs scored, a triple, and six runs batted in.

At times, it seemed like every FH at bat resulted in a hit and run scored. Will Sullivan scored five runs and had a hit every at bat, including two doubles and a three-run home run in the fifth inning. Craig Paridy had the last laugh when an errant throw from Porter’s short stop hit him while running out a hit, by going 5-5 with two doubles, four runs, and three rbis. Molly Williams picked up right where she left off last year with a double, four rbis, and a sick catch for the last out of the game.

Every FHer contributed, from Jenny Alonso getting an rbi single in her first-ever softball at bat, to Dave Whiting and Jen Kelly’s incredible fielding and range at short stop and catcher, respectively. Andrew McClellan and Silvio Marcacci shook off a cataclysmic full-speed collision in left center field to make left and center fields a virtual graveyard for Porter hits, and both chipped in hits and runs at the top and bottom of the lineup.

All in all, a great start. But twelve more games and an entire player-hating league await our team. Will you be there next Thursday to cheer on FH as we take the field against our arch-rivals Burson-Marsteller?

Dog Days of August - VICTORY!!!!!!!!!

FHSoftball beat Edelman 15-3 last night to remain undefeated on the season.

A barren waste land of scorpion-filled sand dunes and skeletons bleached by the sun lay in front of the FHSoftball team. We stepped bravely onto the field, sweat dripping from our brows as game time temperatures hovered near 105 degrees.

"If Edelman wants to rumble, we'll rumble," Coach Sullivan said as he warmed up his throwing arm.

The game got off to a slow start due to stifling heat and Coach Tara's jet-lagged, slurred pre-game speech.

FHSoftball's offense was lead by Tara's Special boys: Matt D. and Ryan H. both longtime members of the FHSHhhhhhh Office on the corner of J and Pennsylvania. Matt hit consistent singles and Ry-Ry had three HR bombs. Brandon Moore got temporary Special boy status after he hit a solo HR in the 6th.

FHSoftball's defense was led by Will's Super Special boys: Matt S., Jeremy S., and Silvio M. Matt was a like a spider-web on first base, Jeremy had an awesome double play and displayed his Jeter-esque arm on numerous occasions, and Silvio made a sliding “Hollywood” catch, ending an inning and not dirtying his socks one bit.

Other great plays were made by Bill Garber, Mark Story, Julie (Silvio's Friend), and Jen Kelly. Special thanks go to Karin Dillner who owned home plate last night.

FH Softball is composed of a crushing corps of individuals:

The interns are flashy, broad chested, and confident. The twenty-something's are serious, level headed, and strong while the thirty-somethings are upbeat gen-xers who never shy away from competition.

Yet, there is one group that is occasionally overlooked. A sect that, due to family obligations and the burning of the mid-night oil, rarely shows en mass at the softball games. After last night, they shall no longer be ignored and there is no question in anyone's mind as to who truly deserved the win the contest of the ages...The Over-40's

Slow and Steady wins the race. As the Under-40 team aimed for the fences, the Over-40's set their sights on the holes, placing their hits and making easy plays. Martha "who's my next VICTIM!" Boudreau and Bill "You ain't gonna hit this sister" Garber shared pitching duties causing fly after fly from the U-40 squad. Bette Levin switched her moccasins for spikes, playing an intimidating catcher, Mike Boyland kept the team hydrated and upbeat from right field, while new comer Mark Story and veteran David "The Wizard" Wickenden minded the left side of the field.

Heather Rosenker and Laura Catalano proved that being really really good at PR doesn't mean you can't hit softball, and Randy "Yeah that's my Beemer" Renjillian caught a clutch line drive in the 4th inning.

Lead by coach Paul Johnson the O's took an early lead. The U's tied the game after Tara Walker hit a solo shot HR in the 3rd and took the lead when Andy Hatch hit a double. Fine hitters included: Kat Shermundund, Will Sullivan, Jen Kelly, Gadi Ben-Yahuda, Silvio "Socks" Marcacci, and Jeremy Steward, and Josh Hartig.

Down 3 runs, the O's needed to rally. Unfettered, Paul Johnson approached Donna "The Rhino" Rohrer in the top of the 5th. He muttered something in her ear, they gave each other "pounds" and Donna glared at Brandon Moore, the U's star pitcher. With the bases loaded, Donna laid down a perfect bunt, bringing in the runner from 3rd. After a flurry of hits from David, Paul, Matt Scherbel (turn-coat), Frank K., and Dan Horowitz, the O's took the win, getting 3 quick outs in the bottom of the 5th.

Thanks to all the fans, drivers, family members, and friends who attended the game.

Dear my most privatest and secret journal,

Monsoons have washed over DC and provided a temporary stay from the heat that makes Jessica's hair big.

The team's spirits are high. Veteran Paul Johnson has bought a new "super" bat and the interns are keeping loose by attending Nationals games, taking notes on Soriano's play, and appearing not once, but 3 times on the jumbo-tron, dancing like this.

During this downtime many members of the FH team have dramatically increased their billable hours, have hit the gym to bulk up their forearms; some have even taken up mixed martial arts. Kate Morris and Jeannette Cassalano have started numerous under ground Moi-Thai boxing contests, raising money for Canadian refugees. Matt Scherbel has been taking Brazilian cooking lessons with George Zhang.

While Will Sullivan has take classes to let his inner demon out, I have focused on anger management classes to possibly keep mine in a bit. We'll see.

Overall the team is a tight unit, ready for battle at the drop of a hat. I look forward to vanquishing all opponents we meet in the play-offs, no matter how many new hires they have acquired since the regular season.

Our next game is Wednesday, July 12th, hope to see a lot of fans, including Lori Rivera, to be at the game.

Until then we will continue to busy ourselves with jeopardy and karayoke.

True to form, FHSoftball brought home another big win last night (16-8). With Bill Garber on the mound dishing out vicious moon balls, Kat S. playing a solid second, and Ryan Hanley hitting not one, not two, but THREE homeruns in three at bats...how could we not!?! Ryan Hanley remains Tara's Special Boy.

A welcome addition to the FH squad have been our interns. Representing the DHizzle was Tricia Wessell keeping score. Noah "Goldisocks" Simon from new bidness had some sweet cathes. Brandon "I love bobble-heads" Moore, had some solid smacks, Josh "But Brannnndoooooooon!" Hartiq coaches a mean first base, and Kate Scermundangnths had no problem making outs on second.

Matt Davison ruled the center field, adding homeruns of his own. An enraged Tara Walker stepped up to the plate, hitting a solo homer over the centerfielder's head. Matt Scherbel , Jeff Weintraub and Will Sullivan lit up the Edelman pitcher like a "flaming zambooka"...."Like Jimi Hendrix at woodstock"..."like the clay ovens of Naan and Beyond."
Jeff Weintraub, Randy Renjillian, Coleman Hutchins, and John Anthony were just wonderful on defense, making some clutch plays and holding Edelman to only 8 runs.

Will Sullivan ran into a tree to catch a foul ball and the promptly fell into the tree, making a relatively simple play into an oscar-worthy performance.

George Zhang won the international player of the year award and now officially knows more about baseball than coach Tara. Well, at least the "real" rules.

Jessica Lass played good catcher, taking only four wild throws from the outfield, later nursing her wounds with ice cold refreshments and Doritos.

Special thanks and mad props to Coleman, John, Bill Garber, and Randy's Friend for driving to the Barking Dog for post game victory burgers. Randy's Friend has no name but really he's cool.

Well done FHSoftball! Enjoy your well earned rest with our BYE NEXT WEEK to be followed, tentatively, by the Intern/Staff game.

Over 40 Under 40!!

While, grammatically, it should be "Older than 40, younger than 40" the game is scheduled to take place June 29 to be followed by a BBQ at Frank Kauffman's house nearby.

Be sure to come participate in the game or merely watch as Senior Managers will themselves to victory - with the help of a mysterious 10-fold increase in workload days prior to the game.

The "younger than 40s" will surely have a say in the competition, using sheer, unadulterated strength and probably a little bit of cheating to level a devastating victory upon the firm's brain trust.

Build it, and they shall come. Whether we’re talking ball fields in Iowa, or PR softball teams, the saying is once again apt. Fleishman-Hillard added another chapter to its impressive 2006 Softball season Wednesday night, further building its roster with a complement of new summer interns, and opening up some breathing room in the standings by posting an impressive 38-7 win over family-feud rival, Ketchum.

In true Ricky Henderson style, David Wickenden, back to full health, led off the first inning with a homerun, the first of what became a hitting display by the FH shortstop on the evening. Wickenden’s 5-5 performance was accompanied by two homeruns by Ryan the second of which second of which was an opposite field, branch-rattling grand slam shot that surely decimated the habitat of a host of woodland creatures. Matt Davison chipped in with a homerun as did Noah Simon (new intern) and the entire Fleishman-Hillard lineup contributed at least one hit, leading the firm’s most dominating offensive display of the season.

After a nail biter versus second-place GMMB, and a bye-week, Fleishman looked rested and loose, aided by a lineup bolstered with fresh-faced,Spartan/Nordic hybrid-intern monsters who generally out energized every person and every dog on a walk in the vicinity of the fields. Thanks goes out to Kate Morris and Matt – the Meat – Scherbel for recruiting ex Soviet athletes for the workplace.

New catcher Lindsay Wooten proved the intern’s invincibility late in the game when struck directly in the shoulder by a near ninety mile per hour throw from the infield. In what would have shattered most players’ arms, Wooten promptly dropped her mitt, sauntered to the sidelines and began to ice her arm with a cold beverage.

Josh, Noah, Brandon and Kat contributed great play in the late innings, daring the rest of the team to, as the famous college football coach Bear Bryant would say, “Go ahead and put up half-a-hundred on ‘em!”

Ryan def. taken home Tara’s “That’s my special BOY!” award. And the MVPs of last nights game was Donna Owens. She drove with out being asked to, saving the team from piling into Mr. Garber’s tank. Donna tolerated coach Walker’s back seat driving, got everyone to the game on time, and cheered or both FH and Ketchum. Thanks Donna!

I Scream, You Scream, We all Scream for VICTORY!

(Bethesda, MD) - The grass was green, the skies were blue, the beer was cold, and FH was on Fire!! Fans swarmed from near and far, including an injured Nancy Nickerson, the Weintraub family, and the Dillness posse all to cheer on the ever-dominating FH troupe.

Coleman Hutchins has the teams highest batting average...as least as far as we can tell. He delighted the crowd with bomb after bomb into the outfield. Dan Horowitz played like a mad-man on third. He plays the hot corner like Ryan Hanley patrols the bone yard, good.

Kate Morris and Pat Guild played catcher while a Jessica Lass, stood on the sidelines kept the roar of the FH fan base alive and kicking. Randy "Bring it On" Renjillian SMACKED a ball into the air, but was robbed by the GMMB defense. Randy tipped his hat and politely took his place in right field. While in the field Randy stared down a runner, putting the fear of time entry into the poor fellow and forcing him back the bag.

Co-Owner of the FH team, Rob Mooney was in attendance, alleviating tensions between both teams when a runner could not find second base, or claimed as such in a classic late-inning "where's the bag" ploy. The benches cleared, "is she safe or out?!?!?!?!"

The timid staffers turned westward, and there, upon a black stallion, wearing khaki dungarees, sat Rob Mooney ready to make the call. The instant Rob spoke the words "do-over" all fears were quelled. The do-over resulted in another close play and yet another confused counter plot "there are only three outs in an inning? Since when?!!!" FH didn't take the bait and rolled to the dugout to inflict more damage at the plate.

Paul Johnson played excellent defense and gave fans a few rumba lessons as he rocked out to GMMB's theme music. Tara Walker had a double, single, and a triple. Will Sullivan played in another person's shorts forgetting his as the DHS Harpie pecked at his eyes while he ran out his office door (cube opening) and raced to the game in time to whip everyone into an appropriately competitive fervor.

New Intern Josh Hartiq made friends with Super Intern George, both playing extremely well with the time they had.

The team player award will be split between John Anthony and Mike McSherry for playing only two innings but remaining to coach bases and allow others to get some field time.

Matt Scherbel, Bill Garber, and David Wickenden played as beautifully and consistent as ever. The Wizard, The Colonel, and The Meat all were solid, on defense and offense.

FH won the prestigious Rob Mooney Ice Cream Cup, and will enjoy some soft-serve being dished out, at our offices, by the players of GMMB.

Thank you to all who came, BREANNE!! , James Yates and all those who supported from a far.

Next week is a BYE so we're heading to the batting cages. GO FH!

The weather stations predicted scattered thunder storms yesterday.

The weather channel warned that heavy rain was heading our way, watch for lightning!

The meteorologist said, "Bring those umbrellas, it's going to be a wet one, back to you Bob."

THE WEATHER PEOPLE WERE WRONG!

APCO was hesitant to play in the rain, they questioned the clouds and looked skyward to see if the lightning had truly arrived. FHSoftball, led by the ever intrepid leaders, Tara Walker and Will Sullivan, marched bravely onto the field and laughed at the sky, daring it to let even one drop fall on the field. Mother Nature and her ominous clouds separated, leaving the field bone-dry, not wanting to incur the wrath of a livid Coach Walker.

Both attitudes were reflected in the teams play. APCO, a mighty team who had scored 30 runs in their first game, were held to only 8 while FH came back from being down 2 to win with 12 runs.

Stellar defense and intelligent hitting were the keys to FHSoftball's success. Jessica Stone was crazy delicious last night. She taunted people as catcher, hit the winning RBI at bat, and took a hit from 5'1", 98 lbs of raging APCO mighty mouse, securing the final out of the game!

Karin Dillner, John Anthony, Ryan Hanley, and Matt Scherbel were flawless in the field turning quick outs in every inning. The Wizard was nothing short of his usual splendiferousness, and Bill Garber pitched magnificently. Will Sullivan was magic in the outfield and once was again able to keep Tara to only 2 outbursts.

Pat Guild, Lindsey Kirn, and Jessica Lass brought pom-poms and cheered like mad for FH's star guest player, Mike Levin. The Lev Train sauntered up to the field, made some amazing catches, hit a few bombs, and disappeared back into the night with nary a whisper. Thanks for braving the weather Michael.

Offense was led by Tara Walker, Randy "I crush you!" Renjilian, Ryan Hanley, The Wizard, and Jeff "You See These Hands!?" Weintraub. All had a number a very nice hits.

Congrats to the entire FHSOFTBALL team, it was great win!

Chevy Chase, Md. -- May 3, 2006 – The Fleishman-Hillard (FH) softball team rolled to a crushing 18-7 victory over rival Porter-Novelli last night in the first game of the season.

Some members of FH’s squad rolled more than others.

Locked in a 1-1 nail-biter in the bottom of the fourth, first baseman Jeff Weintraub made a lunging grab for a hot line drive and, in diving to tag first base, rolled over it, beating the Porter runner by a step. Commentators awarded Weintraub the play of the game for the dramatic stab, which changed the momentum of the contest.

Spurred by Weintraub’s heroics, Fleishman scored four, five and eight runs respectively in the top halves of the 5th, 6th and 7th innings. FH benefited mightily from the breakout performances of Coleman Hutchins (3-3, 3 doubles) Nancy Nickerson (2 hits, 2 runs) and Max Reinke (intern), (Homerun, Double 4 RBIs).

Paul Johnson pitched 1 run ball through the fourth inning, backed by a nearly flawless FH defense, and aided by the slick play of Weintraub, Catcher Jessica Lass, Third Baseman Ralph Posner and Nickerson at Second Base.

The outfield of Brian Brown, Karin Dilner, Matt Davison and Will Sullivan was quiet last night, as FH pitchers, aided by a solid relief performance from Bill Garber, served up 14 ground-ball outs.

The embarrassment-of-the-night award goes to Will Sullivan, who - despite rigorous pre-season training involving several practice sessions and a company-sponsored round at the batting cage - managed to strike out twice in the same at-bat while batting left-handed.

However, Sullivan then doubled to drive in two runs and save what was left of any face he may have had prior to the first pitch.

The Fleishman fan-base was out in full force to cheer the team to victory, aided by James Yates, Donna Owens, Mary LoJacono and Frank Kaufmann.

All-star shortstop David Wickenden left in the third inning with a sports-related injury. After the game trainers said Wickenden was day-to-day but should recover in time for next week’s game.

Pre-Season MVP!!!

The award for pre-season MVP goes to Matt Scherbel, who took the award with 34 voties, or 51% of the vote!!

Runner up goes to Tara Walker who recieved 17 votes, or 25% of the vote.

David Wickenden and Jessica Lass finished third and fourth respectively in the pre-season poll conducted by the Sportswriters of America.

First Game!!

On Wednesday FHSoftball will confront Porter Novelli, one of our most hated rivals.

And when I say hated I mean HATE!

And when I say HATE! I mean we have a friendly rivalry based on mutual respect and a common appreciation for the game.

Porter's team and fans can be identified by their excessive use of denim in outfits as well as colorful bandanas. Don't let their intelligence fool you, they can play ball. Always packed with a solid stock of ringers, Porter players speak loudly and carry big sticks.

Thankfully FH is well equipped for the challenge. Due to multiple injuries suffered during a DELTA Force mission to Cairo, Matt Davison was out last season, HE'S BACK. During this same mission Ryan Hanley went MIA, reappearing one month ago in New Hampshire.

Paul Johnson, David Wickenden, Ralph Posner, Bill Garber, Tara Walker, Matt Scherbel, Jessica Lass, and our bio-engineered super-player, Pat-Guild-Scott-Carman, make up the bulk of the returners.

New players include, but are not limited to: Patrice Mattingly, Mike McSherry, Karin Dillner and Will Sullivan.

Will Sullivan is also assistant coach to Master Coach Tara. While Will's knowledge of baseball exceeds Master Coach Tara's, Will is still too timid to take over as manager. Coach Tara will not hesitate to glare at and bench a SVP after one error and replacing them with an intern. In the same situation Will will simply "clap it up" and wish the individual "better luck next time," whil consoling said player that Tara really has no idea what she's talking about. He'll learn not to speak without being spoken to. Will will be coaching the first game as Coach Tara will be indisposed at a United Nations meeting. He will do his best to scream at people and be nice to them simultaneously.

We need FANS, FANS, and more FANS, and drivers at our games, free refreshments and dinner (chips) will be provided to all who come.

Meet in the FH lobby at 5:45 SHARP, ready to leave no later than 6 pm.

There are several answers to this question, but nothing definitive. Some the word derives from the early days of the game, when the pitchers often sat behind the outfield wall and the advertisements adorning that wall. In one particular case, the pitchers sat behind an ad for "Bull Durham" tobacco.

Yet another theory is that this phrase comes from the egrarian origins of the game, when fields often abutted local farms, and nearby pastures. In one instance, the outfield fence also happened to be the fence of pen full of bulls.

There are obviously many other theories from cattle-like herding of cheap ticket holders into outfield bleachers, and the "bull-like" nature of idle pitchers' conversation.

When it's all said and done, though, the bull pen is merely the place where relief pitchers, closers and those not starting sit during the game.

HECKLE OF THE DAY

HECKLE OF THE DAY: "Skillet!"

A rarely used but extremely effective heckle, best used when opposing players make errors, or "boot" ground balls hit directly into their gloves.

The etymology of the heckle goes back to the days when U.S. Army soldiers played baseball without the use of appropriate gloves, instead using a frying pan, or "skillet" as a substitute fielding device.*

As fielding in this manner was virtually impossible - balls, or rolled up socks tended to bounce out of the skillet with tremendous force and a loud, cacophonous racket - the use of the skillet was soon relegated to history and thus, heckle lore

"Skillet!" is best delivered by placing the emphasis on the first two letters of the word and then prolonging the pronunciation of the letters "i and l" in the middle of the word. Subsequently, the delivery should sound like, "SSKKiiillllet!"

When practicing, be sure to experiment with various levels of volume and pitch.

WORD OF THE DAY

"HAMMY," otherwise known as "Ham Bone," "Ham Dog" or, in severe cases, "The Hammer."

A painful, and sometimes debilitating injury resulting from not stretching before attempting to "launch bombs" or "hit lasers" on the softball diamond. Injuries usually occur when bombs fail to launch or lasers fail to fire, resulting in a mad, "cold-legged" dash for first base on the dribbler hit to the second baseman, or, er, second base..person.

Hammys can strike at any moment so please help your teammates keep a close eye on their impending advance.
